"About Us"
WHO WE ARE
The Chordsmen Chorus is a nonprofit organization dedicated to barbershop singing. We are a Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. The official name is"Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of BarberShop Quartet Singing in America, Inc." (SPEBSQSA). Our goals include camaraderie, community service and vocal harmony. We have over 100 members in our chorus. However, The Barbershop Harmony Society (SPEBSQSA), has over 30,000 members in the United States, Canada, and Europe. We are the largest all-male singing society in the world!
CHORDSMEN HISTORY
The Chordsmen Chapter of The Barbershop Harmony Society is a service-orientated organization chartered in 1955. Only five years later the chapter was crowned International Champion at the Society’s Annual International Chorus competition. Now 50 years later, over 40 chorus members represent just about every occupation and profession and range in age from the "teens" to the "seniors". They are united in the desire to sing four-part harmony in the uniquely American "barbershop" style, and to sing it well.
YOUTH IN HARMONY
The international charitable mission of The Barbershop Harmony Society, through its Harmony Foundation, is to preserve our musical legacy through support of vocal music education in our schools and communities. Since 1964 more than $16,000,000 has been donated to this cause. The Society’s "Young Men in Harmony" program was established to encourage and support vocal music education in the local high schools. During the past four years Harmony Foundation has provided 75 grants totaling $400,000 helping over 20,000 young people to experience the joy of music and singing.
The San Antonio Chordsmen work with our local high schools to encourage and promote an interest in singing and particularly the barbershop style. This year the Chordsmen sponsored 42 young men and 5 music educators to attend a 5 state 4-day musical camp in Denton, Texas. These 4 days culminated in a Saturday evening show performance by these young men to a standing ovation crowd.
